Summary

Soldier。 Summoner。 Saint。 Orphaned and expendable, Alina Starkov is a soldier who knows she may not survive her first trek across the Shadow Fold-a swath of unnatural darkness crawling with monsters。 But when her regiment is attacked, Alina unleashes dormant magic not even she knew she possessed。

Now Alina will enter a lavish world of royalty and intrigue as she trains with the Grisha, her country's magical military elite-and falls under the spell of their notorious leader, the Darkling。 He believes Alina can summon a force capable of destroying the Shadow Fold and reuniting their war-ravaged country, but only if she can master her untamed gift。

As the threat to the kingdom mounts and Alina unlocks the secrets of her past, she will make a dangerous discovery that could threaten all she loves and the very future of a nation。

Alina’s train of thought was very fluid and natural which I really enjoyed。 It’s easy to make a character’s thoughts seem out of place in their own story and Leigh Bardugo executed very well。 Everything in this novel was very enjoyable, real and fast paced。 There were places I felt could have been expanded on like knowledge of the Grisha magic, extents, weaknesses, and especially the amplifiers themselves。 I can’t quite tell whether that was purposef Solid book, I loved it and enjoyed every bit! Either way I’m hopeful that it will be expanded on in the next two books。Mal doesn’t seem very bad so far, he’s not exactly the morally-grey love interest that YA lovers obsess over but I felt as though he was awesome and their love was realistic。 Though at points it felt juvenile, not that I’m expecting anything earth shattering from teenagers。 I’ve read Six of Crows and you can definitely tell that they were written and perhaps even inspired by different things at different points in her life。。。or maybe I’ve been reading too many enemies to lovers books that Mal’s "I see you now even though I didn’t before" didn’t exemplify the version of passion that I’ve grown comfortable with。I would have given this five stars because I devoured it and never felt let down but there was a missing piece that I just can’t place, maybe it was the lack of elaboration after all, but again, I’m hopeful that the next two books will fulfill this!! 。。。more

I do feel like the plot was a bit lacking, but I’m a character reader anyway so I didn’t mind all that much。 Plus, I was very intrigued by the darkling and Alinas power dynamic as well as the romance — waayyyy more than hers and Mals。 By the end of it though, I wasn’t rooting for either of them but just wanted Alina to grow Into herself and own In leu of the Netflix adaptation coming out later this month I decided to read the source material~ and let me just say that I really enjoyed this book! (4。8) i read SOC before this, and this made me understand the world a little better。 i definitely recommend reading this before SOC。 i think SOC is better, it’s just a personal opinion, but i still love this book。 Leigh Bardugo has not disappointed me at all with this。

I found myself completely captured by this book, and I honestly couldn't put it down。 I loved it so much, and I'm so glad I got around to reading it before the Netflix series drops。 I will say that while on the whole I enjoyed it, there were a few things that bothered me。What I liked:-I really loved the plot, and how tightly it was all interwoven。 I liked the pace at which it moved and the twists and turns throughout the whole thing。 -The worldbuilding and so great, it felt realised and tangible I found myself completely captured by this book, and I honestly couldn't put it down。 I loved it so much, and I'm so glad I got around to reading it before the Netflix series drops。 I will say that while on the whole I enjoyed it, there were a few things that bothered me。What I liked:-I really loved the plot, and how tightly it was all interwoven。 I liked the pace at which it moved and the twists and turns throughout the whole thing。 -The worldbuilding and so great, it felt realised and tangible, and I enjoyed it a lot。What I didn't like:-It felt a little rushed, and I felt like we didn't spend quite enough time on certain scenes or relationships。 On the whole it was fine - good, even - but there was a part of me that wanted a more in-depth look at things。 I felt like Alina was a little bit removed from it all, and it just moved so swiftly that I didn't feel very connected to her。Great book over all and I can't wait to dive into the sequel。 。。。more

Do I love the darkling? Yes。 Do I want Alina and the darkling to be end game? Yes。 Did I hate Mal throughout the whole book? YES。 Yes I said “did” idk the fucker started to grow on me towards the end。 Even shed a few tears when i thought he was going to die。 The world building wasn’t as complex, as I thought it would be compared to other books that I read。 It was easy to understand。 I read it quite fast too。 Overall: Loved it!!! 3。5 stars, rounded up because this was a quick read that kept me turning the pages and excited for more。 I'm interested to see how this uniquely magical GrishaVerse broadens and deepens in future installments/series。 On to Book 2! 3。5 stars, rounded up because this was a quick read that kept me turning the pages and excited for more。 I'm interested to see how this uniquely magical GrishaVerse broadens and deepens in future installments/series。 On to Book 2! 。。。more

I love this in world of magic, kingdoms, war, and love! How it does seem like a lot of books I have read as if late。( But that could be a me problem) flowed well,Very easy to get a grip on what's happening and let the story unfold。 The characters are solid but sometimes it's just reoccurring scenes。 I think that is because the author wanted to get the point across。 I have to look up how to pronounce the russian word which can be difficult with my keyboard。 (I only speak english and partial spani I love this in world of magic, kingdoms, war, and love! This a first read for me and I started and finished it in 1 day。 I think that's a promising sign that I will love this series。 Hopefully will finish the series this month。 Preferably before the netflix show comes out, but if not I'm sure the first couple episodes wont spoil the others in the series。 This a first read for me and I started and finished it in 1 day。 I think that's a promising sign that I will love this series。 Hopefully will finish the series this month。 Preferably before the netflix show comes out, but if not I'm sure the first couple episodes wont spoil the others in the series。 。。。more

I accidentally read the Six of Crows duology without reading this trilogy first so it’s time to go back and read before the Netflix series premieres!I love YA fantasy romance, but I forgot how much I hate some of the tropes。 Specifically, the young naive female protagonist who wants desperately to be pretty *eye roll* I find it so unnecessary to the plot or to Alina’s character development。 People can feel like an outsider for a number of reasons, and Alina grew up a poor orphan who is unremarka I accidentally read the Six of Crows duology without reading this trilogy first so it’s time to go back and read before the Netflix series premieres!I love YA fantasy romance, but I forgot how much I hate some of the tropes。 Specifically, the young naive female protagonist who wants desperately to be pretty *eye roll* I find it so unnecessary to the plot or to Alina’s character development。 People can feel like an outsider for a number of reasons, and Alina grew up a poor orphan who is unremarkable and quiet。 It’s perfectly natural that she’d feel out of place without going out of the way to describe her as plain or not attractive。 Other than that, I love the world building and, due to my foray into Six of Crows, am looking forward to getting to see more in the next installment。 Here’s to hoping that Alina can leave her beauty insecurities behind and focus on, you know, saving the WORLD and stuff。 。。。more

I haven't read a book this quickly since I was probably a child。 But this book was exactly the thing that I wanted, a brainless fantasy novel for young people。 I'm not saying the story was dumb, I'm saying I wanted an easy read, just easy on my mind。 At first I was worried it might be too "teenager-y。" There were some instances where I was slightly irritated by the protagonist, wishing the author had chosen to make her reactions a bit more mature。 But it wasn't bad。 I may even read the next one。 I haven't read a book this quickly since I was probably a child。 But this book was exactly the thing that I wanted, a brainless fantasy novel for young people。 I'm not saying the story was dumb, I'm saying I wanted an easy read, just easy on my mind。 At first I was worried it might be too "teenager-y。" There were some instances where I was slightly irritated by the protagonist, wishing the author had chosen to make her reactions a bit more mature。 But it wasn't bad。 I may even read the next one。 。。。more

After years of putting it off I finally read this one and I thoroughly enjoyed it。 Bardugo has a great style and movement to her writing that keeps you flipping the pages。 YA fantasy seems to be a lot of the same and it takes a special writer to make their story rise above the basic structure most of these books tend to have。 Bardugo nails this with really wonderful characters and great dialogue that make you connect with this story even when it’s derivative。 While I devoured this story in a day After years of putting it off I finally read this one and I thoroughly enjoyed it。 Bardugo has a great style and movement to her writing that keeps you flipping the pages。 YA fantasy seems to be a lot of the same and it takes a special writer to make their story rise above the basic structure most of these books tend to have。 Bardugo nails this with really wonderful characters and great dialogue that make you connect with this story even when it’s derivative。 While I devoured this story in a day, it does lose a star because even though I had a great time it does feel like so many other things I’ve read, but Bardugo throws in enough twists and turns on an old formula to make this one an entertaining and worthwhile read!
